 UNIT 10

What is Reported Speech?

Reported speech is used to express statements made by another person without quoting their exact words. It typically involves the following key components:
  • Reporting Verbs: Common verbs used include "say," "tell," "report," and "ask."
  • Indirect Structure: The structure often changes from direct statements to indirect ones, requiring grammatical adjustments.

How to Formulate Reported Speech

  1. Change of Pronouns: Pronouns must be adjusted to fit the new perspective.
    • Direct: "I am happy."
    • Reported: He said (that) he was happy.
  2. Tense Backshift: Generally, it is necessary to shift the tense back one step.
    • Present Simple: "I eat pizza." becomes "He said (that) he ate pizza."
    • Present Continuous: "I am eating pizza." becomes "He said (that) he was eating pizza."
    • Past Simple: "I ate pizza." becomes "He said (that) he had eaten pizza."
  3. Reporting Verbs: Use verbs like "say" or "tell" to introduce the reported speech.
    • Example: "She said (that) she was going to the store." or "He told me (that) he would help."
  4. Time and Place References: Adjust time expressions to reflect the context of the speech.
    • Today becomes that day
    • Tomorrow becomes the next day
    • Here becomes there
  5. Examples of Reported Speech

    • Direct: "I’ll call you tomorrow."
      • Reported: He said he would call me the following day.
    • Direct: "We are playing soccer."
      • Reported: They said (that) they were playing soccer.
    • Direct: "I don’t like this movie."
      • Reported: She said (that) she didn't like that movie.
